Synopsis
This hilarious new adaptation sets the action in a small parochial town in late 19th century Britain, where the corrupt local officials mistake an over-privileged, vainglorious liar, who just happens to be passing through the town, for a high-ranking government inspector. Desperate to cover up their crimes and escape censure, the town’s Governor and his cronies pull out all the stops to try and bribe this dishonest buffoon with money, wine and women.
My thoughts
It’s no surprise that this show made me laugh; it was very much my type of comedy! If you do not like slapstick, puns and buffoonery, this isn’t the show for you.
We’re introduced to a gentleman in bed, which seems to be a nightmare and a massive bang. Be warned, there are a couple of jumps to be expected from this show! It was Governor Swashprattle; he was very pompous and rude. With that, it is still funny how he has people hanging on his every word
Dan Skinner, who played Governor Swashprattle, and Martha Howe-Douglas, Mrs Swashprattle, make a perfect team. Their energy bounces off each other; they have worked as a married couple before, and it works.
Chaya Gupta, playing Marya Antonovna, was a surprisingly funny actress who played her part as a young girl, described as an ugly 20-year-old daughter kept young by her parents. She has a clever way with facial expressions and falling on key. Lol, honestly, I loved this
When we were introduced to Percy Fopdoodle, The inspector, played by Kiell Smith-Bynoe, his acting is portrayed as a drunken, dashing hustler who can talk himself out of many things.
A comedy about hypocrites, hysterics and hustlers!
Now Ivan Brabble is Foppys Lackey, who you would assume was stupid, but he does have a lot in his nogging and had me laughing many times.
The rest of the cast played really well together, and with the slapstick added, it was a joy to watch.
The twist of the ending was brilliant
