An Officer and a Gentleman Musical – 2024 Review

Georgia Lennon as Paula Pokrifki and Luke Baker as Zack Mayo in An Officer and a Gentleman musical

This Officer and Gentleman review looks back at the 2024 musical tour and my visit to New Wimbledon Theatre. I grew up with the film, so seeing the story live gave me a different way to connect with the characters, relationships and themes.

Archive note: This review reflects the 2024 touring production I saw. The tour dates further down the page are kept for historical reference and are not current booking information.

Performances

The formality and routine of Navy life sit at the heart of the story. For several characters, that structure also gives them a sense of purpose and a reason to keep pushing forward.

Luke Baker as Zack Mayo and Paul French as Sid Worley were brilliantly cast. Their friendship came through strongly, and the bromance really worked for me.

Sinead Long’s vocals blew me away. By comparison, I found it harder to connect with Georgia Lennon’s vocals, although her acting made up for that for me.

Jamal Crawford also stood out as Gunnery Sergeant Emil Foley. He brought strength, humour and authority to the role. Louis Gossett Jr.’s performance in the film set a high bar, but I think Jamal made the part his own.

Story, Relationships and Having a Dream

Watching the relationships develop on stage gave the story more depth for me than watching it on screen. In particular, Sid Worley’s hopes and his need to feel loved hit hard.

As that part of the story approached, I could feel the tension building. I had knots in my stomach because I knew what was coming. However, the production handled the sensitive material carefully and the cast gave the scene the weight it needed.

An Old Favourite on Stage

This is an old favourite of mine, so seeing it live with music carrying the story from one scene to the next was a real draw. At the same time, I would have liked some of the training scenes to feel grittier.

For example, the scene where the sergeant punishes Mayo could have used more atmosphere. Rain sounds, mud and a rougher feel would have pushed it closer to the intensity I remember from the film.

Then came one of the most iconic moments: Zack picking Paula up in the factory. My heart burst and I could have cried. That scene still lands.

Staging and What Stayed With Me

The flow of the show worked well, and I loved how the frames and stage pieces changed from one setting to another. The cast also seemed fully committed to their roles. They even shaved their hair off, which certainly added to the sense of commitment.

More importantly, seeing the story live made some of its themes clearer to me. There is the desire to become a better version of yourself, but there is also the feeling of being trapped by your circumstances.

The women’s position in the factory also stood out. They have fewer choices and less power, while many of them see marriage to a successful officer as a possible escape. As a result, the story’s ideas about class, ambition, relationships and opportunity felt more obvious on stage.

Final Thoughts

Overall, this 2024 production gave me a fresh way to look at a film I already knew well. I enjoyed the cast, the emotional moments and the way the stage version brought the relationships forward. Although I wanted a little more grit in places, I still came away feeling that the live version added something new to the story.
