What is The Angry Birds Movie about?
The story takes place on an island populated by happy, flightless birds. Most of them enjoy their peaceful home, but Red has always felt like an outsider. He prefers his own company and often struggles to control his temper.
Everything changes when mysterious green pigs arrive on the island. While the other birds welcome their visitors, Red becomes suspicious. He joins forces with the speedy Chuck and the explosive Bomb to discover what the pigs are planning.
Meeting Red, Chuck and Bomb
We first meet Red when he is trying hard to complete his delivery job. He may be grumpy, but the film quickly shows that there is more behind his temper.
Red is used to being alone. However, his problems eventually bring him together with Chuck and Bomb. Watching their friendship develop is one of the loveliest parts of the film.
My thoughts on The Angry Birds Movie
The island setting is bright and beautiful, with beaches that made me wish I was somewhere sunny instead of dealing with unpredictable London weather. In the UK, you never quite know whether you need a brolly, shorts or possibly both.
The film gave me plenty of giggles, but it also managed to make me shed a tear. The comedy is lively, while the emotional side gives the story more heart than I expected from a film based on a mobile game.
A useful message about feelings
One of the strongest parts of the story is its approach to emotions. Red’s anger causes problems, but the film does not pretend that feelings should simply be ignored.
Instead, it shows younger viewers that emotions are normal and can be discussed. It also explores friendship, belonging and the difference that a little understanding can make.
Is The Angry Birds Movie worth watching?
Yes. It is a fun family film with colourful characters, plenty of silly moments and a surprisingly positive message. Red, Chuck and Bomb make an entertaining team, while the mischievous pigs keep the adventure moving.
If your family already knows the Angry Birds games, there is plenty to recognise. Even without that connection, the film works as an accessible animated comedy about unlikely friends.
