Stepping into Southwark Playhouse Borough for Kenrex, I wasn’t sure what to expect. The stage setup was minimal—a green screen-like floor, a few props, and a simple backdrop. At first glance, it felt underwhelming. Compared to recent productions such as Boys From the Backstuff, this show seemed to rely less on set design. However, Kenrex quickly proved that you don’t need an elaborate stage to create a gripping, immersive experience.
Kenrex Southwark Playhouse Review – A One-Man Powerhouse
Jack Holden delivers an astonishing performance in Kenrex. His ability to embody multiple characters is nothing short of mesmerizing. Not only does he switch between roles effortlessly, but he also alters his stance, gestures, and energy to bring each persona to life. Watching him transform on stage reminded me of James McAvoy in Split—effortless, immersive, and completely captivating.
Minimal Staging, Maximum Impact
Although the set appeared simple, clever lighting, dynamic movement, and carefully placed sound cues brought it to life. Instead of relying on elaborate set pieces, Kenrex focuses on atmosphere and performance to immerse the audience in its world.
Moreover, the sound design played a huge role in heightening tension. Sudden jumps in volume created an intense, unsettling effect that added weight to key moments. While effective, some of the sharper cues felt a little overwhelming.
The Music – An Unexpected Star of the Show
One of the most striking elements of Kenrex is its live music, composed and performed by John Patrick Elliott. 🎸
Rather than serving as background music, his guitar work became an essential part of the storytelling. The way he blended sound with the unfolding drama built suspense and gave the show a cinematic feel. Every note felt intentional, shaping the emotional landscape of the performance. Fans of live music in theatre will undoubtedly appreciate the way it enhanced the show’s impact.
A True Crime Story That Stays With You
As a true crime enthusiast, I found Kenrex utterly gripping. The story doesn’t just focus on what happened—it explores why and how events unfolded the way they did. This psychological deep dive keeps the audience questioning every moment. How did he get this far? What motivated his choices? As the story progresses, these questions become even more unsettling.
By the end, I was completely drawn in. A show that began with an unassuming stage setup evolved into one of the most intense, thought-provoking performances I’ve seen in a long time.
