What is Death Note: The Musical?
The stage musical is based on the manga by Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata. It follows brilliant student Light Yagami after he discovers a notebook that can kill anyone whose name is written inside it, putting him on a collision course with detective L.
The score is by Frank Wildhorn, with lyrics by Jack Murphy, additional lyrics by Morgan Reilly and a book by Ivan Menchell. The returning production is directed by Stephen Whitson, choreographed by Fabian Aloise and designed by Jon Bausor. The Barbican confirms that the cast currently shown on its page is the 2026 company; new casting for 2027 is still to be announced, so this guide will be updated rather than carrying the old cast forward.

Accessibility
The Barbican lists access tickets from £34 with a free essential companion ticket where needed, wheelchair spaces and caption-view seating through its Access Scheme. For the 2027 return, the currently listed access performances are a captioned performance on Saturday 24 April at 2.30pm and an audio-described performance on Saturday 1 May at 2.30pm, with a touch tour at 1pm for the audio-described performance.
Why See Death Note in 2027?
The return is notable because the 2026 Barbican season sold out and broke the venue’s musical box-office records. For manga and adaptation fans, it is also a chance to see one of Japan’s best-known modern stories translated into a large-scale stage musical rather than another screen version. If you missed the 2026 company, the longer 2027 run gives London audiences another opportunity — but do not assume the previous cast is returning until new casting is officially announced.
