The Maiden of Venice at Birmingham Hippodrome 2026

Latest Update

The Maiden of Venice is scheduled to play Birmingham Hippodrome from 26 September to 3 October 2026. This is a current 2026 guide, not a 2025 archive page.

Overview

Created by Carlos Acosta for Birmingham Royal Ballet, The Maiden of Venice is a full-length reimagining of La Bayadère, resetting the story in Renaissance Venice while retaining themes of love, betrayal, power and revenge.

Creative Team

Direction & Choreography: Carlos Acosta
Set & Costume Design: Anna Fleischle
Lighting: Lucy Carter
Music: Ludwig Minkus, arranged by Gavin Sutherland
Orchestra: Royal Ballet Sinfonia

What to Expect

The production moves away from the original ballet’s 19th-century setting and reframes the story in Venice. The source material supplied for this draft describes a plot involving Admiral Sandro, Nicola, the Doge’s daughter and Bishop Olivolo, set against a world of political intrigue, jealousy and spiritual conflict.
