A new chapter begins for East London’s theatre scene with the arrival of Soho Theatre Walthamstow. Opened on Friday, 2 May 2025, this vibrant new venue brings a powerful mix of heritage charm and cutting-edge creativity to the heart of Waltham Forest.
Housed in the beautifully restored 1930s Granada building, the venue now features a 960-seat Grade II-listed auditorium*, brand-new studio spaces, four distinctive bars, and an in-house restaurant. It’s designed to echo the energy of Soho Theatre, Dean Street, while bringing the buzz out east.

Inside the Theatre
- Auditorium: 960-seat capacity, retaining original ornate detailing inspired by the Alhambra Palace in Spain.
- Studio spaces: Intimate rooms for fringe work, workshops, and community programming.

A Rich Cultural History
The site has hosted performances since 1897, and in 1930 it reopened as the Granada, with architecture by Cecil Masey and stunning interior design by Theodore Komisarjevsky. Over the decades, it became a key cultural spot, welcoming legends like:
- The Beatles
- The Who
- Duke Ellington
- Dusty Springfield
- Roy Orbison
- The Rolling Stones
From pantomime to rock ‘n’ roll, it was a community cornerstone. But after its closure in 2003, it faced potential redevelopment into a church.
Thankfully, thanks to the tireless efforts of local campaigners, Waltham Forest Council and Soho Theatre, the building was saved, restored, and reborn as a theatre for a new generation.

Community & Creative Engagement
Soho Theatre Walthamstow isn’t just a stage — it’s a community hub.
- 15,000 tickets for £15 were made available to local residents, students, and workers through a partnership with Waltham Forest Council.
- Creative workshops for ages 16–100+, including:
