Chislehurst Caves is one of the most unusual days out in South East London and Kent: a vast underground maze explored by lamp-lit guided tour. It works equally well as a local history visit, a family adventure and — if you like your days out a little darker — a brilliantly atmospheric stop for spooky-season plans.

Checked 1 September 2026: Chislehurst Caves is currently open Wednesday to Sunday, on Bank Holidays except Christmas and New Year, and daily during local school holidays. The caves open from 10am, with the last tour at 4pm.
How the Tours Work
You cannot explore the caves independently. All visitors enter as part of a lamp-lit guided tour through the underground passageways.
Tours normally leave on the hour and last around 45–50 minutes. At busy times, group sizes may be limited to around 40 people.

Tickets can be purchased online. Tickets may also be available from the ticket office on arrival, but spaces on a particular tour are not guaranteed, so advance booking is useful if you are travelling specifically for the caves.

Accessibility & Sensory Information
The caves are a very specific environment and it is worth knowing what to expect before you book.
The official visitor guidance describes the underground route as dark and uneven and recommends sensible footwear such as boots or trainers. It also warns that the experience may not be suitable for people with an acute fear of darkness, claustrophobia or mannequins.
The caves are cooler than outdoors, particularly during warmer weather, so an extra layer can be useful.
Wheelchairs and pushchairs are permitted inside the caves, but the venue warns that the natural uneven floor surfaces can make the route difficult and a rough ride. Someone in the group will also need to carry a lantern. Guide dogs are permitted.

The caves occasionally host special and alternative events as well as their regular public tours. In September 2026 this includes the Wisdom & Wyrd Market, bringing spiritual traders and service providers to Chislehurst.
They are also used for live-action role-playing adventures by Labyrinthe, making the venue much more than a standard heritage attraction.
