Overview
The play takes us to New York in 1965. Dorothy Kilgallen is a celebrated journalist and television personality working on what could become the biggest investigation of her career.
Marilyn Monroe died in Los Angeles in 1962. President Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas the following year, and suspected gunman Lee Harvey Oswald was then shot and killed by Jack Ruby on live television. Kilgallen remained unconvinced by the official explanations and continued investigating possible connections involving Hollywood, the Kennedy family, organised crime, Jack Ruby, Carlos Marcello and Oswald.
As she digs deeper, the questions become more dangerous. Speculations is a dramatic exploration rather than a documentary or definitive solution to the cases, and it asks how far somebody might be prepared to go in pursuit of the truth.
Who Was Dorothy Kilgallen?
Dorothy Kilgallen was a prominent American newspaper columnist, investigative journalist and television personality. She reported on major trials and public figures and later investigated the assassination of President Kennedy.
Her own death in 1965, aged 52, has also attracted speculation. The play explores her determination to follow connections she believed others had overlooked, while dramatising the personal risk surrounding her investigation.

Olivier Award-winning actress Janie Dee stars as Dorothy Kilgallen. Her extensive theatre career includes Carousel, Follies, The Motive and the Cue, Blithe Spirit, Noises Off and Comic Potential.
