SlimeFest: Very Much Outside My Comfort Zone
Oh yes, getting into the spirit of All Hallows like never before! We were off to Guildford for a fun-filled day that should certainly get the senses going — if not, you’d probably find me hiding in the corner crying over slime and all that nasty sticky stuff.
I was trying to get myself more used to playing with messy things and dirt without the hairs on the back of my neck standing on end and my whole body quivering in disgust. Slime was definitely a challenge for me.
Keira, on the other hand, had a thing about slime at the time. Anything sticky and dirty and she would jump at the chance. Evie wasn’t quite so sure, although the disco was a hit because she loved music.
A Road Trip to Guildford
I totally loved my car, and any opportunity I got to drive somewhere new, have a day out and discover something different, I generally went for it.
SlimeFest took us to The Boiler Room in Guildford. Looking back, the drive was part of the adventure too — although I had originally thought we were travelling all that way for something closer to an all-day event.
Science, Slime and a Monster
The children were properly involved rather than simply watching. They followed instructions, made slime and some even got to make glow-in-the-dark slime.
The setup was eye-catching and informative enough to keep me interested too. I’ve always been fascinated by science and loved learning about things such as atoms and molecules, even though my GCSE Science grades never reflected how interested I actually was in the subject.
From Science Experiment to Frankenstein
What I particularly liked was that the party was set out almost like a story. There were different elements to follow and clues about what might happen next, all leading towards a Frankenstein-style finale.
So it wasn’t only slime and science experiments. There was a little bit of English literature sneaking into our Halloween day out too, which made the whole monster theme more interesting for me.
The children were amazed by what was happening — including all the noises and experiments — and it was lovely seeing them get involved.
Was It Worth the Journey?
This was the part I was less impressed with. I was disappointed that we had travelled so far for around 60 minutes because I had initially thought SlimeFest would be an all-day event.
That didn’t mean the session itself was bad. The children were clearly wowed by it, and there was a lot packed into the hour. It was simply a long journey for the amount of time we actually spent at the event.
Looking Back: An Early Face Your Fears Adventure
There’s something quite funny about looking back at this one now. Sticky slime was absolutely not my idea of fun, which made this a very fitting finale to my original Face Your Fears week.
I’m keeping that sensory reaction exactly as I experienced and described it at the time rather than retrospectively putting a label on it. What mattered was that I deliberately tried something outside my comfort zone while the girls got to enjoy something completely different.

Historical Event Information
The 2016 experience was based around Genie Lab’s Monster Party theme and lasted approximately 60 minutes. The original promotional information described creating a monster, touching its brain, smelling its burps, bringing it to life and making gooey monster eyeball slime.
