Sally Hansen 14 Day Nail Shield Review
Archive note: This review was originally published in 2013. Product availability, pricing and packaging may have changed since then.
At the time, Sally Hansen 14 Day Nail Shield was sold as a pre-treated sheer colour strip designed to bond to the nail for strength and protection while adding a hint of colour. The strips went on dry, so there was no drying time or smudging, and they were promoted as lasting for up to 14 days. The RRP listed when I reviewed them was £7.50, although I picked mine up for £1.
Applying the Nail Shields
Prepping was straightforward: a normal manicure, pushing the cuticles back and smoothing the nail surface before choosing the closest strip size for each nail.
Peeling the strips was a little baffling at first, but I realised both protective layers needed to be removed before applying the shield to the nail bed. To shorten the strip, I found it fairly easy to mark where the nail ended, bend the excess over the edge and peel it away.
My first impression was that they were surprisingly easy to use. My nails looked sleek and tidy, even after cleaning.
How They Wore After 7–9 Days
After several days my nails were noticeably longer and felt stronger, but I was less keen on the discolouration and crackled effect that developed on the surface.
I eventually used nail polish remover to take the shields off. Over the following days, five of my nails broke. While the product had some positives, that experience meant I wasn’t sure I would use it again.
For the £1 I paid, it was still an interesting product to try and a useful little snapshot of the nail products I was experimenting with at the time.
