Ants on a Log Snack – Healthy Fun or Family Fail?

Celery sticks filled with peanut butter and topped with raisins to make Ants on a Log

Archive note: This family snack post was originally published in 2013 and refreshed in 2026. It is kept as part of the Clarissa’s Corner archive.

I first spotted Ants on a Log while browsing Pinterest: celery sticks filled with peanut butter and topped with raisins. It looked quick, simple and worth trying at home.

What Is Ants on a Log?

The classic version uses just three ingredients:

  • Celery sticks
  • Peanut butter or another suitable spread
  • Raisins

Slice the celery, add the spread and place the raisins along the top to make the “ants”. It can work as a quick snack, picnic idea or lunchbox extra where suitable.

Our Family Taste Test

The adults liked it: crunchy, salty and sweet. The child verdict was rather more dramatic and very definitely a no.

So this one did not make it into the regular snack rotation, although I still liked the idea and would happily try variations.

Ants on a Log Variations

  • Swap the peanut butter for another nut or seed spread where appropriate.
  • Try dried cranberries or other small dried fruit instead of raisins.
  • Use cream cheese or hummus for a savoury variation.

Allergy note: if making this for children or a group, check allergies and school or venue rules before using nuts or nut-based spreads.

2026 Archive Update

This was one of the very early family-food posts on Clarissa’s Corner. I have kept the original idea and family verdict while tidying the page so it works as an archive recipe/snack post rather than presenting old nutrition wording as current advice.
