Heathers The Musical is the deliciously dark, sharply funny rock musical based on Daniel Waters’ 1988 cult film. Set at the fictional Westerberg High, it follows Veronica Sawyer as she is pulled into the orbit of the school’s powerful—and unforgiving—three Heathers. Then J.D., the mysterious new rebel, arrives and turns popularity into something far more dangerous.
With its big rock score, acid humour and a story that balances teen social warfare with much darker subject matter, Heathers has become one of the most loved modern cult musicals. Its 2026 London return was especially notable as the opening production at the new Arts at Marble Arch, the Arts Theatre’s temporary home during refurbishment.

The venue sits beside Marble Arch and was created as a temporary new home for the Arts Theatre while its main building undergoes refurbishment.
What is Heathers The Musical about?
Veronica Sawyer is tired of being a nobody at Westerberg High. When the three fashionable, feared and fabulously cruel Heathers invite her into their inner circle, it feels like everything she has wanted.
But friendship with Heather Chandler, Heather Duke and Heather McNamara comes with a price. When the charismatic but volatile J.D. arrives, Veronica is drawn into a situation that escalates far beyond school gossip, parties and popularity.
The musical uses the story’s pitch-black comedy and 1980s high-school world to explore peer pressure, cruelty, isolation, reputation and the harm that can happen when nobody feels able to speak honestly.

The stage musical is based on the film starring Winona Ryder and Christian Slater, written by Daniel Waters.
The 2026 production was directed by Andy Fickman, with choreography and associate direction by Gary Lloyd. The creative team also included:

Running time, age guidance and content notes
Heathers The Musical runs for approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes, including one interval.
It is recommended for audiences aged 14+. The production includes strong language and mature themes, including murder, suicide, sexual violence and references to eating disorders. It also uses strobe or flashing lights, loud sound effects including gunshots, theatrical haze and smoke.
No children under four are admitted.

Part of why Heathers still lands so hard is that it belongs to a whole generation of sharp, stylish, and slightly unhinged teen stories.
