Reviewed after an ODEON Scream Unseen screening. Spoiler-free.

I went into Ice Cream Man through ODEON’s Scream Unseen without knowing what was waiting for me — and it turned out to be such a fun surprise. If you like your horror gruesome, entertaining and gleefully over the top, this is very much one to put on your radar.

What is Ice Cream Man about?

In an idyllic summer town, an ice cream man begins serving children sweet treats with horrifying consequences. It is a deliberately wild set-up, with the sort of slasher energy that knows exactly what kind of film it wants to be.

My Ice Cream Man review — 4/5

This film completely delivered on the things I enjoy most in a silly, savage horror: memorable gore, creative kills and an unapologetically big personality. The weaponry and splatter have that playful extremity that I love in modern slashers, while the film keeps its summery nightmare feeling all the way through.

It will not be for the squeamish — the gore is absolutely part of the fun — but that is precisely why it worked for me. It is messy, intense and a brilliant Scream Unseen pick when you want to be surprised.

Would I recommend it?

Yes, especially for fans of bold, over-the-top slasher horror and anyone who enjoys inventive practical-looking carnage. Go in knowing as little as possible, settle in and enjoy the ride.
