Punchdrunk Viola’s room is set in a warehouse in Woolwich’s newly constructed area with not a lot of signs to show where to go, unless you come from the train station, you have to look for the way thankfully there was a punchdrunk sign on the side of the building but no clear signal to the entrance.
Speaking to one of the staff this is because an experience they did before was set as a secret location.
I was intrigued by Punchdrunk Viola’s Room, I mean Helena bonham carter, narrating a story you follow bear foot with headphones my expectations were that there would be jumps scares due to the setting.
In groups of six
In groups of six we are to go through given our information pack with the headset told to wait for a light above the door before we can move forward. And to follow the light, we are told no matter what just keep walking forward and together.
The set up I have to say was really well done we walked into a home through corridors and wallpapered walls to find ourselves in Viola’s Room.
The details were very interesting but I didn’t know if we was meant to take anything away from what was in the room surroundings there were ripped book pages with words circled out and paragraphs underlined, for me I wasn’t sure if they put too much detail in the area then in the story line.
Sensory Overload
As an undiagnosed ADHD autistic adult I found the sensory an issue with keeping track of the story line, and many parts confused me because I was looking at the details in the rooms we walked through to see if it corresponds with what Helena was saying.
I felt a lot of preparation for the experience with the lighting, down to the story syncing with each person going through was really clever and interesting, the use of props to create the illusion of being in the story.
Changing of flooring for me was a weird thing as they didn’t correlate to what scene we had described, a hedge maze with wood bark flooring we had soft floor and walls.
The main part was with sand, I feel the wood bark would have been better in that area.
In all it was a fun time but I’m still left unsure on the plot and for the price £27.50 + Booking Fee I’m not sure myself I would have been happy with the results.
