Babies The Musical at The Other Palace
“Babies The Musical” is currently rocking the stage at The Other Palace, brought to life by j Godfrey. The show follows the lives of eight Year 11 students as they juggle GCSEs and the ups and downs of teenage life. At 15 or 16, school dominates most of their world, but we get a sneak peek into their personal lives too. Some of them are dealing with secrets or come from broken homes, living with other family members. Themes like peer pressure, the need to fit in, and the search for friendship are all explored.
Catchy Songs and Creative Choreography
I have to say, the songs in “Babies The Musical” are super catchy—I’ve been humming “baby baby baby” since I left the theater, lol. The choreography and stage design are on point, making the whole show flow really smoothly. It’s interesting that there’s no central authority figure; instead, we just follow the teens through their school day and some outside scenes. The clever use of tables, lockers, and especially the stairs as their hangout spot was a great touch.
Real Issues and Relatable Characters
A baby simulator is introduced because the previous year had a high number of teen pregnancies. The school hopes these baby simulators will act as a deterrent by giving the students a week of “parental practice.” The show also touches on LGBTQIA+ topics, featuring characters who are gay, bisexual, and non-binary. It’s great to see Alex being seen and accepted, and the song “Hot Dad” even gets an audience member involved, which was a blast.
Final Thoughts and Rating
Overall, I give “Babies The Musical” 4 stars for its heartfelt depiction of Year 11 life and all the nostalgia it brought back. The show is 2 hours long with an interval, and if you can’t get enough of the music, you can find the songs on Spotify. This musical is a fun and touching trip down memory lane.
