The Reluctant Vampire BBC 2026: Eric Morecambe Book, Cast & How to Watch

The Reluctant Vampire BBC comedy series promotional image

The Reluctant Vampire launches today, Sunday 4 October 2026, bringing Eric Morecambe’s children’s vampire story to BBC One and BBC iPlayer with Lenny Rush leading a huge British comedy cast.

The timing could hardly be better for spooky season. This is not being positioned as straight horror, but as a supernatural coming-of-age comedy about identity, family expectations and a boy raised as a vampire who discovers that he is not actually undead at all.

What is The Reluctant Vampire about?

Val has grown up in a conventional vampire family, but the bloodthirsty rites of passage expected by his tradition-obsessed father have never come naturally. When Val discovers his own reflection, his mum finally reveals the family secret: he is not a vampire at all.

That leaves him caught between two worlds. By day, Val explores his newly discovered human side with village girl Gertie. By night, he still has vampire duties and family expectations to negotiate without revealing the truth.

From Eric Morecambe’s book to BBC television

This is where the series becomes especially interesting for Clarissa’s Corner’s Books & Adaptations strand. Eric Morecambe published The Reluctant Vampire in 1982, after making his fiction debut with Mr Lonely. The children’s story was followed by The Vampire’s Revenge.

A new Fontana paperback edition was released on 24 September 2026, just ahead of the BBC adaptation. It runs to 208 pages and carries ISBN 9780008839000. Rather than treating the TV series as an unrelated Halloween comedy, this gives us a lovely route back to Morecambe as an author as well as the television performer most people know.

The Reluctant Vampire cast

Lenny Rush plays Val, with Tom Davis as his father Victor, Sian Clifford as Valeeta and Gabriel Nagy as suspicious brother Vernon. Ellie-May Sheridan plays Gertie, the village girl who becomes Val’s friend.

The wider ensemble includes Charlie Cooper, Esther Smith, Asim Chaudhry, Joe Wilkinson, Kiell Smith-Bynoe, Ray Fearon, Bill Bailey and Ross Noble. Bailey and Noble voice/play the castle’s gargoyles, while Wilkinson appears as Wilf the Werewolf and Chaudhry as Igon.

Accessibility and content guidance

Accessibility: Episode 1 is listed with subtitles and audio description. If you need a particular access feature, it is still worth checking the individual episode on BBC iPlayer before watching, as availability can vary.

It is being presented as a family comedy, but that does not automatically mean every child will enjoy the same level of spooky. It is worth checking the BBC’s episode guidance if your child is sensitive to particular themes.

Why it fits family Halloween TV

Vampires, gargoyles, werewolves and a castle give it the Halloween ingredients, but the central story is really about fitting in, identity and the tension between who your family expects you to be and who you discover you are. That makes it a useful gentler spooky-season option to sit beside the scarier side of October viewing without pretending that “family comedy” means the same thing for every household.

How to watch The Reluctant Vampire

All six episodes are available on BBC iPlayer from today, Sunday 4 October 2026, so you can watch the whole series without waiting week by week. If you prefer to watch on television, episode one airs on BBC One at 6:40pm tonight.
