Thelma & Louise: A New Musical is now playing in the Young Vic’s Main House until 24 October 2026. Amy Lennox and Rachel Tucker lead the world-premiere cast, with the original film’s Oscar-winning screenwriter Callie Khouri adapting her story for the stage.
The production has music and lyrics by Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Neko Case and is directed by Trip Cullman. The first song, For a Change, and a full rehearsal gallery have also been released.
What is Thelma & Louise: A New Musical about?
Louise invites her best friend Thelma on a spontaneous weekend away. Their brief escape from ordinary life changes completely after an encounter with a stranger at a roadside bar. As the getaway becomes a desperate journey, their friendship turns into something dangerous, defiant and unbreakable.
The 1991 film, directed by Ridley Scott and starring Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis, became a cultural landmark. Its mixture of humour, trauma, female friendship and rebellion still feels recognisable more than three decades later.
This stage version has an especially interesting link to the original: Callie Khouri is returning to her own characters rather than handing the adaptation to a completely separate writer. The musical can preserve the emotional heart of the road movie while using songs and live performance to explore what Thelma and Louise cannot always say aloud.

Why this adaptation is on my watchlist
Film-to-stage musicals can sometimes feel like recreations built around familiar moments, but this has the ingredients to do something more interesting. Khouri is reconsidering her own screenplay, Neko Case brings an original musical voice, and Lennox and Tucker are both performers capable of carrying the story’s humour, danger and emotional weight.
Most importantly, Thelma and Louise’s friendship remains the engine of the story. It is not simply an iconic road trip or famous ending; it is about two women discovering what freedom means to them and how fiercely they will protect one another.
