Review: Tom Fleatcher’s There’s a monster in your show, Blackheath halls

Evie and I recently attended There’s a Monster in Your Show at Blackheath Halls, a delightful 50-minute musical based on Tom Fletcher’s popular Who’s in Your Book? series. As fans of his books, which are perfect for children aged 2 and up, we were excited to see how the series would translate to the stage—and it didn’t disappoint!

A Mischievous and Interactive Adventure

The show follows Little Monster and his friends Dragon, Alien, and Unicorn as they embark on a fun-filled, mischievous journey. The audience is encouraged to clap, wave, and sing along, making it a truly interactive experience. Unlike most shows, photography and video recording were allowed, which was a lovely surprise. It’s rare to be able to capture such special memories, and I truly appreciated this unique touch.

The story kicks off when Charlie and his friends prepare for the show, only to discover that Monster has gone missing from his book! Gasps echoed through the audience as the search began. With help from the audience—complete with pantomime-style “He’s behind you!” moments—Monster is eventually found, and the show can go on. Evie was particularly thrilled when Unicorn made her grand entrance!

Fun for All Ages

The production captured the energy and charm of Fletcher’s books beautifully. The colorful stage, complete with balloons and imaginative props, kept little ones engaged from start to finish. The show’s interactive elements encouraged plenty of giggles, and the reasonable ticket prices made it an affordable treat for families.

The merchandise stand was also impressive, with a range of items including books (some we didn’t have yet, much to Evie’s delight!). While I was disappointed not to find a pin for my collection, it was great to see new additions to Fletcher’s book range available for purchase.

Blackheath Halls, set in the charming historical village of Blackheath, is conveniently located near public transport options. The train station is just across the road, with local bus routes and a cab office nearby. However, parking is limited, so public transport is the best option. If you’re attending a children’s event, I recommend bringing your own refreshments, as the venue’s options are more geared toward adults.
