Review: Chitty Chitty Bang Bang - A Magical Nostalgic Ride

Timeless Classic Reimagined

Based on Ian Fleming’s beloved children’s story and the iconic 1968 film, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang returns to the stage with a fresh spark of magic. The UK Tour introduces us to quirky inventor Caractacus Potts, played by Adam Garcia. He brings charm and energy to the role.

With the help of his children, Jemima and Jeremy, Potts restores an old racing car. Unexpectedly, the car has magical powers. Alongside the delightful Truly Scrumptious (Ellie Nunn) and the ever-lovable Grandpa Potts (Liam Fox), the family embarks on a whimsical adventure. They travel to distant lands, facing villains and challenges along the way.

Stellar Cast and Creative Team

Directed by Thom Southerland and choreographed by Karen Bruce (Strictly Come Dancing, The Bodyguard), the production boasts breathtaking design by Morgan Large (Newsies, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat).

Charlie Brooks delivers a chilling performance as the sinister Childcatcher. Meanwhile, Adam Stafford (Boris) and Michael Joseph (Gordon) add delightful slapstick comedy. Their chemistry keeps the audience entertained throughout.

A Nostalgic Experience

From the moment I stepped into the theatre, the grand and intricately lit staging set the tone for an unforgettable evening. The mechanical elements cleverly reinforced the show’s inventor theme, adding layers of charm.

A special mention goes to the young talents Isla Ithier (Jemima) and Ayrton English (Jeremy). Their poise and talent impressed me. As a mum, watching their performances brought a tear to my eye.

The award-winning musical features unforgettable Sherman Brothers songs, including Toot Sweets, Hushabye Mountain, and Truly Scrumptious. Hearing these classics again brought back so many childhood memories.

The choreography was superb, especially during the Old Bamboo number. Garcia’s slight misstep, rather than disrupting the scene, added an endearing touch of authenticity.

Then came the most magical moment—the car took flight. Seeing Chitty soar was jaw-dropping. The moment gave me goosebumps and made me feel like a child again.

Unforgettable Performances

Liam Fox’s portrayal of Grandpa Potts was spot-on. He brought warmth and humor to the role. Meanwhile, Martin Callagan (Baron) and Jenny Gayner (Baroness) delivered standout comedic performances. Gayner balanced playfulness with a touch of mischief. She perfectly suited her role while keeping it family-friendly.

This production of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is running at the Churchill Theatre until 30th June. It’s a nostalgic journey I will cherish. For the first time, I’m giving a show a 5-star rating for its heartwarming, magical appeal.

For those catching the tour later this year, The Vivienne from RuPaul’s Drag Race will take over the role of the Childcatcher from October, performing in Oxford through to Blackpool.
