Set in the bustling streets of 1960s Pudding Lane, this pantomime follows Dick Whittington as he embarks on a quest for fortune. The show is packed with retro costumes, energetic choreography, and a nostalgic soundtrack featuring hits like The Kinks’ You Really Got Me.

Phil Yarrow shines as Meggs, the spirited baker running the Pudding Lane shop, with Alice Fitzwarren by her side. The swinging ’60s backdrop adds a fresh twist to the Dick Whittington pantomime formula, creating a unique take on this classic tale.

Samuel Bailey as Dick Whittington

Samuel Bailey brings a warm and endearing energy to his role as Dick. His performance captures the character’s charm and determination, making him a relatable hero for all ages.

Louise Cielecki as Muffy the Rat

Louise Cielecki delivers a standout comedic performance as Muffy the Rat. Her animated expressions and perfectly timed humor had the audience, especially my 10-year-old daughter, E, in stitches. She’s a true scene-stealer!

Anthony Spargo as King Rat

Anthony Spargo was captivating as the villainous King Rat. His knack for balancing menace with humor—complete with occasional breaks in character—added a delightful twist to his performance. Greenwich Theatre audiences love a great villain, and Spargo didn’t disappoint.

Inès Ruiz as Tommie the Cat

Inès Ruiz brought surprising depth to Tommie the Cat, blending comedy, saxophone-playing, and a talking cat’s charm into one unforgettable performance. Her energy kept the audience engaged and added extra layers to the Dick Whittington pantomime.

Is Dick Whittington a Family-Friendly Pantomime?

While Dick Whittington and His Cat boasts many pantomime staples—like slapstick humor, catchy songs, and a vibrant cast—it leans heavily on adult jokes. For families with older kids, these moments will likely add to the fun. However, for younger audiences, the humor might feel a bit out of place.

As a parent attending with my 10-year-old daughter, who has special needs, I found the balance tipped too far toward adult content. While she enjoyed some of the characters, the mature jokes were not ideal for her age.

Audience Etiquette Challenges

A notable downside of the performance was the behavior of some audience members. While it’s wonderful to see friends supporting cast members, constant cheering and disruptions distracted from the show. As a result, the experience felt less enjoyable, especially for families seeking a relaxing night out.
