Latest update: Tall Stories’ Olivier Award-nominated adaptation of The Smeds and the Smoos comes to Queen Elizabeth Hall at Southbank Centre from 28 October to 1 November 2026 as part of the London Literature Festival.
Overview
Based on the much-loved picture book by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler, this colourful space adventure follows two alien families who believe they should stay apart — until a young Smed and Smoo fall in love and zoom off into space together.
The Tall Stories production mixes storytelling, music and playful family theatre with the book’s message about friendship, difference and bringing people together.

Why See It?
At around an hour long, this is an easy half-term theatre option for younger children and a lovely choice for families who already know the book. The story has plenty of silliness and space adventure, but it also gives children something simple to talk about afterwards: why the Smeds and Smoos decide they should not mix, and what changes their minds.
