A Ghost in Your Ear was one of those theatre experiences I booked because it sounded completely up my street: a ghost story, an intimate studio space and binaural sound delivered through headphones.
I saw it at Hampstead Theatre Downstairs with my friend Lou during my ongoing horror-theatre phase. We bought our own tickets, so this was not a press invite.
What Is A Ghost in Your Ear About?
An actor arrives late at a sound studio for a last-minute audiobook recording job, without having seen the script beforehand. The story he begins recording is a particularly chilling ghost tale — but as the evening continues, the horrors start to feel as though they are escaping from the story and into the studio itself.
The production used binaural sound technology, with the audience wearing headphones throughout so the horror could be delivered directly into your ears.

Creative Team
The play was written and directed by Jamie Armitage in collaboration with Ben and Max Ringham. Set and costume design was by Anisha Fields, lighting by Ben Jacobs and dramaturgy by Gurnesha Bola.
What Was It Like?
The Downstairs space at Hampstead Theatre is small and intimate, which worked really well for this kind of production. The sound booth was part of the stage picture, and the whole set-up immediately made it feel as though we were sitting inside the recording session rather than watching it from a distance.
The headphones and binaural sound were easily the most distinctive part of the experience. Having noises move around you and feel as though they were happening right beside your head was clever and very sensory.
Was It Scary?
For me, not especially. It was fun, and there were moments where the sound design worked really well, but I didn’t find it genuinely frightening. A few of the beats also felt fairly predictable.
I still enjoyed the concept and the way it experimented with sound, but out of the ghostly theatre I had seen around the same period, 2:22 A Ghost Story worked better for me overall.
My Rating
3/5
Dates, Venue and Running Time
A Ghost in Your Ear played at Hampstead Theatre Downstairs from 6 December 2025 to 14 February 2026.
Running time: approximately 1 hour 30 minutes without an interval
Suggested age guidance: 14+
Content and Sensory Notes
The production included depictions of hanging and childhood trauma, references to parental death and grief, strobe lighting, periods of darkness and sudden noises. Because the show relied heavily on headphones and binaural audio, the sound experience was central to the production.
