Looking for children’s theatre in London without gambling on whether a two-hour show, dark auditorium or noisy audience will actually work for your child? This growing guide brings together West End family musicals, book adaptations, puppetry, toddler theatre, specialist children’s venues and South East London options — with practical access and sensory planning alongside the fun stuff.
This is Clarissa’s Corner’s growing guide to family theatre in London, bringing together current and upcoming shows, children’s theatre venues, archive reviews and practical planning information for families.
Children’s Theatre in London: Where to Start
Choosing a show for children is about more than spotting a familiar title. Age guidance, running time, noise levels, audience participation, interval arrangements and accessibility can make a huge difference to the experience. We try to include those practical details in our individual show guides wherever they are confirmed.
If you are planning theatre around autism, ADHD, sensory needs or other access requirements, visit our Inclusive Theatre Adventures guide and Accessibility & SEN hub.
Current & Upcoming Family Theatre
Our family theatre coverage changes throughout the year as new London seasons, school-holiday shows and touring productions are announced. Recent and upcoming guides include:
- High School Musical on Stage – family musical theatre heading to London.
- Stick Man Live – Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler’s story brought to the stage with puppetry, songs and live music.
- CATS at Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre – our guide includes running time and current age guidance.
- Cirque Alice at Royal Festival Hall – a family-friendly Alice in Wonderland-inspired circus production.
Dates, prices and age guidance can change, so use the individual show guide for the latest information we have checked before booking.
Toddler Theatre London
London theatre is not only for school-age children. Babies, toddlers and preschoolers can find shorter shows, relaxed concerts, puppetry and interactive performances designed with younger attention spans in mind.
When choosing theatre for under-fives, useful things to check include the running time, whether children can move around, buggy parking, baby-changing facilities, loud or sudden noises, and whether re-entry is allowed if you need to step outside.
Our archive includes experiences such as In the Night Garden Live, while our Churchill Theatre coverage has also included Baby Broadway performances created for babies, toddlers and their grown-ups.
Puppetry & Books Brought to Life
Some of our favourite children’s theatre memories have started with books already loved at home. Puppetry and stage adaptations can be a brilliant first step into live performance because children arrive already knowing the characters and story world.
- The Very Hungry Caterpillar on Stage – an archive review featuring Eric Carle’s colourful stories and puppetry.
- The First Hippo on the Moon – our David Walliams stage adaptation review.
- There’s a Monster in Your Show – an interactive family theatre review from Blackheath Halls.
- Julia Donaldson Author Spotlight – books, stage adaptations and family adventures in one place.
- We’re Going on a Bear Hunt – books, stage shows and family experiences.
Children’s Theatre Venues in London
Alongside the West End, London has theatres and arts venues with strong programmes for children and young people. These are worth checking throughout the year because smaller-scale productions can be more intimate, more interactive and sometimes easier for a first theatre visit.
Polka Theatre
Polka Theatre in Wimbledon specialises in theatre for children and young audiences. Clarissa’s Corner has previously covered productions including Jack V Giant and Sam Wu Is NOT Afraid of Ghosts, as well as Polka’s artist-development work.
Unicorn Theatre
Unicorn Theatre near London Bridge is dedicated to theatre for children and young people, with productions spanning early-years audiences through to older children and teenagers. We include individual Unicorn productions in our seasonal theatre round-ups when relevant.
South East London Family Theatre
You do not always need to head into the West End. We also cover family theatre and creative venues across Greenwich, Lewisham, Blackheath, Woolwich, Bromley and the surrounding area.
- The Albany, Deptford – theatre, family events and accessibility information.
- Tramshed Woolwich – theatre, youth arts and creative learning.
- Blackheath Halls – local theatre, music and family performances.
- Churchill Theatre Bromley – a regular stop for touring family productions, musicals and pantomime.
First Theatre Trip with Children
A first theatre trip does not have to mean a huge West End musical. A shorter local show, familiar book adaptation or relaxed performance can be just as memorable and may be easier for a child who is still getting used to sitting in an auditorium.
Before booking, check the official age guidance and think about running time, intervals, seating, noise, darkness and whether audience participation is likely. If your child may need to leave temporarily, it is also worth checking the venue’s re-entry policy before you go.
Family Theatre Archives & Reviews
Clarissa’s Corner has been writing about children’s and family theatre for years, so we keep older reviews and seasonal guides available as archives rather than pretending past productions are still running.
Our London Family Theatre – Summer 2025 Archive preserves one of those earlier seasonal round-ups. You can also explore the wider Family & Children hub for theatre, books brought to life, films and family experiences.
