Latest Update
Checked 1 September 2026: Creekside Discovery Centre has a busy September programme including a guided low-tide walk, free wildlife surveys and its annual open day on 19 September. This guide keeps the practical visitor, education and accessibility information together so individual events can be added without creating lots of short-lived posts.
Overview
Creekside Discovery Centre is an urban wildlife and environmental education centre beside Deptford Creek in south-east London. Run by Creekside Education Trust, it combines conservation, outdoor learning and community activity in one of London’s most unusual tidal landscapes.
The centre is especially known for guided walks into Deptford Creek at low tide. Creekside says it is the only place on Deptford Creek with a sloped access point into the Creek, and visitors are only taken onto the river bed with a guide.
What You Can Do
- Join a guided Creekside Low Tide Walk.
- Take part in family low-tide walks on selected dates.

Our Visit to Creekside Discovery Centre
I’ve actually visited Creekside Discovery Centre with Evie on a school trip, so this isn’t just somewhere I’ve spotted on an events calendar. It’s a place we’ve experienced through its education side, which makes the school-visit and hands-on learning information especially relevant to Clarissa’s Corner.
I’m keeping this as a visitor guide rather than turning it into a full personal review unless I can match the visit to photos, a date or more detailed notes from the trip. That way the practical information stays current without inventing details from an older visit.
Family and Education
Creekside has a particularly strong education angle. School visits can combine practical fieldwork with science, geography, history and environmental learning. Facilities include an indoor learning space, private Creek access, a wheelchair-accessible pond-dipping platform, a nearby nature park and an urban wildlife site supporting more than 300 species of wildflower and invertebrates.
Family Low Tide Walks are designed mainly with children aged 8–14 in mind. Children must be accompanied, and participants need to be able to wear the supplied waders and walk in the Creek for up to around an hour.
Accessibility
The Creekside building is fully accessible and the site is wheelchair accessible, although some outdoor surfaces are rough and assistance may be needed. There is an accessible toilet and the pond-dipping platform is wheelchair accessible.
The Creek itself is a wild tidal river and is not wheelchair accessible. Creekside says it will try to provide the best possible dry-land experience where entering the Creek is not suitable. Two disabled parking spaces may be available by prior arrangement for visitors with limited mobility.
Assistance dogs are permitted; other dogs are not allowed on site. If you have accessibility or SEND requirements, contact Creekside before booking so the team can advise on the most suitable experience.

Deptford Creek and the River Thames
Deptford Creek is tidal and meets the River Thames near Greenwich, so Creekside also fits naturally into a wider riverside day out. If you want to see London’s river history from the water, read our Terrible Thames boat tour review. It is a separate experience, but a useful companion for families interested in the Thames.
Why Visit?
Creekside crosses several Clarissa’s Corner strands at once: an unusual London day out, hands-on family learning, local history, urban wildlife, accessibility planning and environmental education. The guided low-tide experience gives it enough long-term value to work as an evergreen guide rather than a one-off event post.
