Current Highlights – September & Autumn 2026

Horniman Museum & Gardens

The Horniman is in its 125th anniversary year and has several strong family options running into autumn. Voyage to the Deep – Underwater Adventures continues until 1 November 2026, with current standard prices from £9.80 adults and £7 children, while the Octonauts: Adventure at the Horniman trail is free and runs across the Museum and Gardens until the same date. The new Kusuma Nature Play Area is also free, open daily during Gardens hours and includes improved ramped access to the Nature Trail. Check current Horniman listings.

Broadway Theatre Catford

The Broadway Theatre’s autumn programme includes Cranes from 23 September to 4 October 2026, a new theatre piece inspired by a true story about protest, the criminal justice system and activism. The venue also has comedy, music and community events throughout September and October. See the current Broadway Theatre programme.

October half-term: Lewisham maintained-school dates currently list half-term as 26–30 October 2026, so the Horniman’s underwater exhibition and free Octonauts trail remain useful family options across that planning window.

Halloween, Half-Term & Christmas 2026

October Half-Term

Lewisham maintained-school half-term runs from 26–30 October 2026. At the Horniman, the free Octonauts: Adventure at the Horniman trail and Voyage to the Deep – Underwater Adventures both continue until 1 November, making them useful half-term options. The Horniman Gardens are scheduled to close on 31 October for a large-scale event, so check the museum’s current visitor information before travelling.

At The Albany, Eshu at the Crossroads takes place on 24 October 2026 for ages 5+, just as the half-term period begins.

Christmas at The Albany

The Gingerbread Man runs at The Albany from 5–24 December 2026 for ages 3–10. Tickets are currently £15, with an early-booking offer of £13 or four tickets for £44 when booked before 30 September. The 11am performance on 12 December is both BSL interpreted and a Relaxed Performance. Deptford Lounge also has a pay-what-you-decide Kids Roller Disco on 12 December.

Cinderella at Broadway Theatre Catford

Broadway Theatre Catford’s 2026 pantomime is Cinderella, running from 9–31 December 2026. Current ticket prices range from £17 to £45.50. A BSL signed and Relaxed Performance is scheduled for 30 December at 5pm, making this an important accessibility-aware festive option for the borough.

More Christmas markets, lights and free community events are expected to be announced closer to the season. Older Lewisham Christmas listings are not being rolled forward without fresh 2026 confirmation.

Catford & The Broadway Theatre

Catford is one of the borough’s main cultural centres, with The Broadway Theatre, Catford Market, local libraries and nearby green spaces including Mountsfield Park and Ladywell Fields. The Broadway Theatre hosts theatre, comedy, music, family shows and community events, with both Catford and Catford Bridge stations a short walk away.

Forest Hill & the Horniman

Forest Hill is home to the Horniman Museum and Gardens, one of Lewisham’s best-known family attractions. It combines museum collections, gardens and regular family programming, making it an easy option for a half-day visit or part of a wider Forest Hill day out.

Deptford & New Cross

Deptford and New Cross bring together markets, independent food, local arts, music, university culture and riverside history. This part of the borough works particularly well for readers looking for smaller cultural venues, street-level discoveries and less obvious London days out rather than traditional big attractions.

The Albany & Deptford Lounge

The Albany is one of Deptford’s strongest cultural anchors, with family theatre, youth programmes, free community activity and accessible participation projects. Current autumn highlights include free Jazz Saturdays from September to December, a pay-what-you-decide all-ages Roller Disco at Deptford Lounge from 17 September and family performances through autumn and Christmas. Creekside Discovery Centre

Creekside Discovery Centre is a particularly unusual Deptford find, combining urban wildlife, environmental education and guided access to Deptford Creek at low tide. September 2026 includes a Low Tide Walk on 6 September, free fish and bird surveys and the free-ticketed Creekside Annual Open Day on 19 September, 11am–3pm. The building is fully accessible, although the wild tidal Creek itself is not wheelchair accessible. Check Creekside events.

Goldsmiths & New Cross Culture

Goldsmiths, University of London adds exhibitions, screenings, talks and creative events to New Cross. The university’s September 2026 calendar includes degree shows, film activity and the Welcome to the Playground exhibition from 11–13 September, with more public events continuing into October. These are best treated as changing hub listings rather than separate posts unless a particularly strong exhibition or event emerges. Browse current Goldsmiths events.

Beckenham Place Park & Mansion

Beckenham Place Park is one of Lewisham’s strongest all-year family and outdoor anchors, with 96 hectares of parkland, nature trails, playgrounds, BMX and skate facilities, a lake, regular markets and the Grade II* Beckenham Place Mansion. Despite its name, the park is managed by the London Borough of Lewisham.

Autumn 2026: the Mansion’s current family programme includes a little folk Halloween pop-up for early years on 29 October. A little folk Christmas sing-song is also currently listed for 17 December 2026. The park has hosted larger Halloween and Christmas programmes in previous years, but older dates will not be rolled forward until 2026 versions are officially confirmed. Sydenham, Forest Hill & Ladywell

Sydenham Wells Park is one of Lewisham’s strongest free green-space options, with children’s playgrounds, an under-5s play area, tennis courts, an outdoor gym, multi-sports courts, a water play area, nature reserve and a sensory garden designed around the five senses. The park has disabled toilet facilities, although opening days and hours are limited, so check before travelling.

Ladywell Fields runs for around a mile between Catford and Ladywell, with the river running through its three fields. It has play areas, an adventure playground, skate park, café, cycle route, tennis, outdoor gym and nature spaces. The upgraded skatepark reopened in August 2026 and is free to use. The park also links into the Waterlink Way, making it useful for a longer walking or cycling day.

Forest Hill Community Library has regular children’s and family sessions including Rhyme Time and Baby Bounce, while Lewisham Libraries also runs free creative and wellbeing activities for children and teens across the borough. These recurring sessions are best kept in this hub rather than turned into individual short-lived posts.

Lee & Hither Green

Manor House Gardens in Lee is a useful free local green-space stop with a lake, mature planting, children’s play facilities, tennis courts and a skate area. It sits within the Lee Manor Conservation Area, while the neighbouring Manor House is now home to Manor House Community Library.

The library has recurring community activity rather than one-off destination events. Current 2026 listings include reading groups and a free monthly Teen Creative Writing Club for ages 14–18, with access needs welcomed through the organiser contact. These are best kept as hub content rather than separate event posts.

Mountsfield Park, close to Hither Green and Catford, is another useful family green space with sports and play facilities, including tennis courts. Manor House Gardens and Mountsfield Park were both among Lewisham’s Green Flag Award-winning parks for 2026.

Parks, Walks & Outdoor Days

Lewisham has a surprisingly strong network of parks and green spaces. Ladywell Fields runs for around a mile between Catford and Ladywell, with play areas, an adventure playground, skate park, cycle route, café, nature areas and the river running through it. Other useful local options include Hilly Fields, Mountsfield Park, Manor House Gardens, Telegraph Hill Park, Beckenham Place Park and Sydenham Wells Park.
